Adam Mickiewiecz (1798 - 1855), the great poet of Poland, was born two hundred years ago on December 24, 1798. To commemorate this event, Hippocrene Books presents this bilingual volume of his poems having love as their theme. Love, however, has many meanings, and Mickiewicz, the Romantic, was familiar with all of them. In his poems one can find a whole spectrum of human love - for women, nature, God, the arts, friends, one's native country. and beauty or truth. As a poet Mickiewicz was equally capable of depicting the exalted passion of a Romantic youth (Gustaw of the Forefathers) and the delicate emotions of a young girl (Zosia of Pan Tadeusz); the sensual experience of a blase ladies' man of fashionable salons (sonnets), and the profound patriotic and religious feelings of a mature man. As for Romantics in general, and for Mickiewicz in particular, love is a force having an absolute dimension, a force which spans eternity and gives inner freedom and strength. "Have heart and look into your heart," declared Mickiewicz in the ballad "The Romantic," the poetic manifesto of his early years.
As a full blooded Romantic, Mickiewicz left a treasure of unforgettable love poems. This beautiful gift edition contains poems addressed to Maryla (his Beatrice), as well as sonnets and verses of sensual and spiritual love. The editor, Krystyna Olszer, wrote an informative introduction; she is a native of Poland, teaches Polish at Hunter College, and is the book review editor for Polish Review.
