The Teutonic Knights' 13th-century founding of Torun, along the Vistula in the Chelmno region of Poland, represented a symbolic (if neither friendly or peaceful) encounter between two worlds: Christendom and a by-then fast-fading world of pagan belief. But history and location would also ensure a further role for Torun as venue for more amicable and productive get-togethers - from the two peace conferences held here in the 15th century, via the Colloquium Charitativum convened in 1645, through to today's international gatherings of theatre artists, musicians and academics.
