People often say that history is the memory of a nation and therefore the basic factor shaping its identity and the "sine qua non" condition of its survival. Aren't these too big words for flowers shining there in the pasture ground where a girl as fresh as a rose is carrying a basket full of roses? I don't think so considering that it is also in that naive and popular form that the memory of generations survived.
Wielanek's grandfather as a young soldier on Marshall Joseph Pilsudski's used to sing these songs together with his troops when marching in 1920. Thirty years later Stasiek's father would hum them along with his friends, but very quietly and only with the windows closed tightly. Another thirty years passed by and Stasiek Wielanek himself together with his "Warsaw Band" can sing out loud all the songs so uselessly pushed into official oblivion. Some people thought the legionary as well as the light-cavalryman could have been forced out of the national mythology. Really, it would make a cat laugh!
The lyrics of all those well-known, newly created and those slightly forgotten but found in an old source, songs are sung by Stasiek Wielanek's Band in their original versions and not "smoothed out" due to the existing state of affairs as it used to be in the past. And the melodies flow all by themselves from the heart...Henryk Kotarski.
