Description

The history of the Marian cult on the River Suprasl can be traced to the beginning of the 16th century.  It was then that Aleksander Chodkiewicz, the Grand Lithuanian Marshall, started the construction of a castle on the banks of the river.  To raise the prestige of the undertaking, he brought monks to the place, founded a monastary for them and erected an imposing church - a mausoleum of the Chodkiewicz family, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  In the 17th century, work on ornamenting the church was continued by Abbot Nikodem Szybinski.  In 1643 he placed an order with Gdansk woodcarvers for an iconostas, in which the picture of the Madonna with Child was to be placed.  Eventually the picture was ornamented with a silver robe and placed in a side altar.  It was the subject of veneration and through its intercession many people received special favors, were cured and had their bad fortunes reversed.  All such events have been documented in a special book.
The devotion of Our Lady of Suprasl reached its peak during the uniate period (1601-1839).  Following the last partition of Poland (1795) and the liquidation of the Union in 1839, the Orthodox authorities issued a ban on venerating Uniate pictures without permission from the Holy Synod in St. Petersburg.  In 1915 the picture itself tragically disappeared during the evacuation of the monastary deep into Russia.
The text of the Litany is a selection of fragments of "Modlitwa Do Nayswietszey Maryi Panny Supraslskiey, Wielkimi cudami slynacey" (Prayer to the Most Holy Virgin Mary of Suprasl, Famous for her Great Miracles) and "Piesn do Nayswietszey Maryi Panny Supraslskiey) Songs to the Most Holy Virgin Mary of Suprasl) from the 18th century, published in 1799.
Juliusz Luciuk is Poland's most prominent living composer of music created out of religious inspiration.
Performed by the Bialystok Chamber Choir "Cantica Cantamus" and the Polish Radio Orchestra.
