Description

A Polish sabre (szabla) is an Eastern European long one-edged melee weapon. It started to be used in Poland in the 15th century thanks to relations with Lithuania, Hungary and war contacts with Turkey, where sabres were very popular. A sabre consists of a blade and a hilt made of a grip and cross-guard quillions. A hilt may be open or closed with a hand guard. A one-edged bladed ended with a two-edged yelmen is responsible for the sabre's attack force. The cut is inflicted with a sharp edge of the blade. Due to Polish tradition and history, a sabre constitutes a particular symbol, which makes it a highly esteemed weapon. This miniature makes a perfect letter opener.

The 1917 sabre was the first sabre for Polish soldiers made by native Polish producers after the Partitions. It was part of the equipment of the Polish Armed Forces formed under the German protectorate. It was intended for the cavalry and infantry and its design was specified in regulations and instructions from 1917. Such standard sabres became part of the weaponry of the Polish Army. In 1919, sabres of this type were funded by Duchess Izabella Radziwiłłówa and gifted to the 12th Brigade of Polish Uhlans (light cavalry). Since then. the 1917 sabres have been called "radziwiłłówkas". They were characterized by slightly curved narrow blades frequently adorned with the motto "Bog, Honor i Ojczynzna" (God, Honor And Fatherland). The hilt consisted of a wooden grip lined with leather enlaced with wire and quillions with a hand guard. The main hand guard branched into two side bars. At the junction of the hand guard and the grip, there was the Polish crowned eagle.
