Description

The St. Clare cloister, the manuscript presented here comes from, is considered as one of the oldest and most active musical centres in Poland. The convent of St. Clare has been established in Poland in the 13th century.  The Blessed Kinga, queen of Poland and wife of the king Boleslaw Wstydliwy founded the cloister in Stary Sacz in 1280, which soon became an important music centre, mainly due to its strong Franciscan tradition. The queen herself introduced during the worship and vespers,  Considering the fact that music was often part of the convent's rule such and activity should not surprise us today. However the ways of musical practice varied quite often - so the Carmelitan nuns for instance did not sing at all and "were stunned when listening to the songs of the St. Clare convent".  The collection of the St. Clare convent in Stary Sacz includes two positive organs and a clavichord.  The archives also mention an instrumental band which was active in the cloister.
