Description

Many Slavic ethnic groups, including Belarusians, Bulgarians, Carpatho-Rusyns, Croations, Czechs, Poles, Serbians, Slovaks, Slovenes, Sorbians (Wendish) and Ukrainians decorate eggs for Easter.  Many of the names derive from the Slavic root "pisa" which relates to writing.  In Slavic tradition, the egg is written, not drawn or painted. Several non-slavic ethnic groups also practice the art of egg decoration including the Hungarians, Lithuanians and Romanians.

The "drop-pull" or "pin-tip" decorated eggs are one that many remember being created by their parents and grandparents during the week before Easter.  This technique was practiced requiring minimal tools and supplies.  Every home had a sewing basket filled with a jar of buttons, salvaged zippers, spools of thread, a card of needles and of course a cake of beeswax (for water proofing thread) and round headed straight pins.

This color illustrated book includes over 300 color egg decorating patterns and instructions including  Belarusian, Bulgarian, Carpatho-Rusyn, Croation, Czech, Polish, Serbianian, Slovakian, Slovenian, Sorbian (Wendish) and Ukrainian.
