The origin of the Makow Orchestra's musical style and songs stems from the more popular classical folk music and songs sung a weddings, folk festivals, and other folk gatherings during the pre-World-War-I period in the southwestern region of Poland (western half of Galicia, under the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy) and especially in the vicinity of Makow Podhalanskie. It was here that six musicians, famous for their talent, formed the Makow Orchestra which played with great vigor and enthusiasm.
Two such musicians migrated to the United States, bringing their music notes with them. Just before the outbreak of World War I, concertina player Wojciech Dzialowy of Makow, and violinist Jan Dranka of Skolyszyn, met in Chicago. They formed a small group which played at weddings and other functions. In 1922, joined by clarinetist Jan Piwowarczyk from Miechow and other musicians, they organized the Makow Orchestra in America. The group consisted of seven musicians: a lead violin, two second violins, bass, clarinet, flute and concertina. As a group they played together through 1938. During the peak of its popularity, between 1924 and 1932, the orchestra had three singers - the most notable of which was Jan Piwowarczyk. Besides playing dances and the usual social functions, they also combined with other groups and presented concerts of Polish folk and classical music, appearing at the Orchestra Hall in downtown Chicago.
Jan Piwowarczyk excelled as a singer. He interpreted his songs with feeling. His talents were much in demand. As an actor in Chicago, he appeared on the "Polish Barn Dance" radio programs produced by Zeb Zarnecki with such personalities as Marisha Data, "Corno Hanka" and Antonina Blazonszyk.
