Ballady - Polish Folk Ballads The songs in this collection are examples of the best known ballad motifs popular in various regions of Poland as well as in some European countries. They are recordings made in 1975 - 1998 of folk singers form the regions of Mazowsze (tracks 6,8,9,13,17), the area of Radom (tracks 3,4,16), of Cracow (track 1), of Suwalki (tracks 5, 10), of Krosno (track 2), or Sieradz (track 19), of Wielun (track 12), and the Lower Silesian region of Opole (track 18). On this CD there are also four ballads performed by singers born outside the present borders of Poland: in Wolczuchy near Lwow (track 14), in Listrovec in Croatia (track 7,15) and in Dunawiec in the Ukrainian Bukovina (track 11). In folk tradition, ballads were mostly performed jointly by groups of singers during housewives' meetings in the autumn and the winter, occassioned by goose-down tearing, sauerkraut pickling, etc. This authentic communal way of singing is no longer to be found in the Polish villages. It is only practiced by ensembles which adjust their repertoires to stage demands, thus losing the original freedom and spontaneity of the song. For this reason, our recording contains exclusively solo recordings of ballads, which preserve the authentic quality and the freedom of performance, and have allowed us to illustrate the melodic variants as well as the individuality of each of the singers. English-Polish booklet with details about the songs and performers included.
