The forests of Poland rank as one of the world's largest managed, sustainable forest areas. They are under the control of the Polish Forestry Commission, which employs a continuous rolling program of forest husbandry. During the winter months, planned areas of mature forest are cleared of underbrush, bushes, and small unwanted trees in order to improve the environment for the mature oak and white pine. The Commission also maintains a program of replacement. Areas selected for planting are cleared to create the space required for free growth of the young saplings. Wood from the cleared bushes and small trees is held to have no commercial value, because of its small size. It is normally burned on site. However the makers of our natural wood crayons and quality woodcraft products are able to purchase this wood under contract from the Forestry Commission for the manufacture of these products. Instead of being burned, the wood is handcrafted into beautiful, natural products, and money is directed back into sustaining Poland's forests. Branches are sorted by wood type and girth, cut to standard lengths, and stored for drying. The most common woods used for crayons are birch, willow, ash and elm. In order to create these crayons, colored crayon material is inserted into each end of the wood (it does not go all the way through so that it will not be pushed out of the crayon during use).
