Orthodox Church Music Group under the direction of Rev. Jerzy Szurbak has existed for over 40 years, its origins date back to September 1971, when for the purposes of the performance of M. Gogol's Inspector at the Dramatyczny Theater in Szczecin, church music was recorded as a musical illustration for the performance. After this performance, the founder and conductor of the ensemble, the young priest Jerzy Szurbak, received an offer of permanent cooperation from the director of the Warsaw Chamber Opera, Stefan Sutkowski.
Orthodox music at the hand of Fr. Szurbaka became a real breath of spirit, it touched the hearts of listeners, overcame divisions and joined people of different faiths and nationalities in prayer. The group's chronicle includes over 1,600 concerts, as well as many radio, TV and film recordings. In addition to numerous performances in the country, he also gave concerts in Austria (1993), Belgium (1995), Brazil (1986), Finland (1985), France (1986, 1993, 1995 and 1998), The Netherlands (1995), Japan (1994), South Korea (1994), Germany (1977, 1985, 1993, 1995 and 1996), Senegal (1986), Sweden (1982), Switzerland (1978, 1984, 1985, 1997 and 1999) and in Ukraine (1989). The ensemble has repeatedly provided the musical setting for films by A. Wajda, J. Skolimowski, J. Majewski, A. Holland and J. Hoffman. He also collaborated with outstanding singers: J. Rappe, P. Raptis, K. Pustelak, K. Szostek-Radkowa, L.A. Mroz, B. Ładysz, M. Boberska, M. Pańko and with the world-famous tenor N. Gedda (Upsalla, Stockholm, Warsaw).
Choir of Fr. Szurbaka was sent to religious music festivals many times, where he always proudly represented Polish multiculturalism and religiosity. The role of the Orthodox Church Ensemble in Polish culture and its conductor cannot be overestimated. He is credited with bringing Orthodox chants out of Orthodox churches and introducing them to Catholic and Protestant churches, as well as cathedrals, concert halls and philharmonic halls in Poland and around the world. By presenting the most beautiful pieces of this genre of vocal art, he also contributed to a better knowledge of Orthodoxy, its spirituality and mysticism, while implementing the idea of practical ecumenism.
