Where did Anna get her strength?The story in this book is different from many immigrant stories because it is told from the perspective of a woman. It describes the area where she was born in the Russian Partition, her early life and the tragedy before she left for America. Somehow, she overcame the challenges of travel across the Atlantic to the United States and found the strength to build a new family without the support of any her Polish family being near. I believe that she gained her strength from the tragedy of her early life in Poland and the challenges she overcame to start her new life in America. She worked hard each day but still had time to be happy with her garden and her family. In writing my grandmother's story I wanted to go beyond the names, dates, and pictures in the albums. She was more than that. It is very important to ask why she did what she did. The story asks questions about Anna's fears in making these changes and hopefully will give the reader insights that will help them understand their immigrant ancestors more.
