The Polish term Kresy refers to a territory that was formerly the eastern provinces of Poland. These territories today lie in western Ukraine, western Belarus, as well as eastern Lithuania, with such major cities, as Lviv, Vilnius, and Hrodna. (Source Wikipedia).
The album "Borderlands in Polish Art" contains the most valuable works from the area of painting and graphics from the National Museum in Krakow, related to a common theme of the former Borderlands of the Republic of Poland. Works of many artists - from the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to the interwar period, combines admiration of nature, history and culture of borderland lands. The chapters proposed by the author - "Romantic borderlines", "Nostalgic regions", "Kresy Młodopolskie", "Huculszczyzna festival", "Towards a new reality" - allow to follow the evolution of motives and changes in interest in borderland topics. Among the artists whose works are included in the album are the most outstanding creators of Polish art of that time - including Juliusz Fałat, Józef Brandt, Józef Chełmoński, Artur Grottger, Leon Wyczółkowski, Jan Stanisławski, Ferdynand Ruszczyc, Józef Pankiewicz, Teodor Axentowicz, Kazimierz Sichulski. Essays introducing the individual chapters allow for a closer look at biographies related to the Borderlands of artists as well as the history of individual themes.
Album „Kresy w sztuce polskiej” zawiera najcenniejsze dzieła z obszaru malarstwa i grafiki pochodzące z Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie, powiązane wspólnym tematem dawnych Kresów Rzeczpospolitej. Prace wielu artystów – od przełomu XVIII i XIX wieku do dwudziestolecia międzywojennego łączy zachwyt nad przyrodą, historią i kulturą kresowych ziem. Zaproponowane przez autorkę rozdziały – „Kresy romantyczne”, „Kresy nostalgiczne”, „Kresy młodopolskie”, „Festiwal Huculszczyzny”, „Ku nowej rzeczywistości” – pozwalają na prześledzenie ewolucji motywów i przemian w zainteresowaniu kresową tematyką. Wśród artystów, których dzieła znalazły się w albumie, są najwybitniejsi twórcy polskiej sztuki tych czasów – m.in. Juliusz Kossak, Julian Fałat, Józef Brandt, Józef Chełmoński, Artur Grottger, Leon Wyczółkowski, Jan Stanisławski, Ferdynand Ruszczyc, Józef Pankiewicz, Teodor Axentowicz, Kazimierz Sichulski. Eseje wprowadzające do poszczególnych rozdziałów pozwalają na bliższe zapoznanie się zarówno z biografiami związanych z Kresami artystów, jak też z historią poszczególnych motywów.
