Originally, the band consisted of Mitch Alberts on accordion and solovox, Ed Gerlich on clarinet and sax and Ted Wozniak on drums. It was after World War II that this group was formed. Mitch and Ed Morys served with the Air Force, Ed Gerlich with the Army, and Ted with the Marines. In 1946, with Ted still at the Great Lakes Base, the band managed to get together on the weekends that Ted was able to get leave. Their first jobs were at dances and weddings in Bucktown on Chicago's Northwest side. They went over well and they soon expanded into nightclubs, banquets and outdoor picnics, carnivals, street dances and parades. With the expansion of Polka music on radio, the Harmony Kings participated in many broadcasts on WTAQ and WOPA. They were the first Chicago Polka band to make a public TV appearance.
